Penang, Malaysia, February 4, 2020 – For World Cancer Day, Vygon Asia today announces that it will donate 25 Vygon Polysite ISP implantable ports for patients undergoing chemotherapy at Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital.

Taking place every February 4, World Cancer Day aims to raise awareness and education about cancer, preventing millions of deaths each year; pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease. World Cancer Day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Today is the 20th anniversary of this critical awareness day.

Vygon’s Polysite ISP port is usually offered when a patient’s medical treatment requires regular administration of medicines and infusions, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. During the procedure veins can undergo thinning; locating veins to inject medicine and draw blood can become very difficult, even for qualified medical personnel. Without the help of chemo ports, repeated jabbing to locate these very thin veins might be inevitable. Chemo ports are a pain-free and efficient solution for addressing this issue.

“We are proud to again support the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital and its patients. Following the donation of 50 chemo ports last year as part of our One Port One Life program in Asia, this new donation is in line with our goal to support local hospitals that treat underprivileged cancer patients with the latest technology, otherwise unaffordable to them,” said Thanapathy Kumaraiah, regional director, Asia-Oceanic, at Vygon.

“We would like to thank Vygon again for this generous donation. It helps us to continue to offer free chemo ports for patients in need and leverage our charitable mission in providing optimal cancer care for this group,” said Joan Lim-Choong, chief executive officer of Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital.

The chemo port handover session is followed by an awareness walkabout which will see Vygon and Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital team members reaching out to the public to spread awareness and hand out cancer awareness merchandise.

In 2019, the World Health Organization named Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cancer, as one of top ten threats to public health. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million, or one in six, deaths in 2018.
